LAKE SHORE ELEMENTARY RECEIVES $1000 WINTER WONDERLAND ART PRIZE
Vancouver School’s Entry the Top Vote Getter for Second Straight Year

Children's Art Contest Winners

(Vancouver, WA - 2015) When dwindling resources are a reality in our schools the visual arts are most often an early casualty. Unless you are an enterprising teacher like Erin Stromme.

For the second straight year, the budding artists of Ms. Stromme’s 5th grade class at Lake Shore Elementary School in Vancouver have won a $1000 First Place prize for their original artwork submitted at the 22th annual Winter Wonderland Children’s Art Contest.

The award will be used to enhance the resources of the school’s art department. Last year’s prize money financed the construction of art room shelving which allowed Ms. Stromme to expand in another artistic medium – clay.

“The improvements to the art room gave us a whole new area of artistic expression to explore,” said Stromme. “We now have an area where our clay projects can dry and cool when they come out of the kiln.”

“The Winter Wonderland competition is a great opportunity to showcase elementary student artwork,” she says. “We’re already brainstorming about how to best use this year’s prize money.”

Supporting the community is an important component of Winter Wonderland which was presented this year by the Columbia Humane Society. More than $611,000 and over 44 tons of food have been donated to local non-profit groups in the past 22 years. Entries from schools throughout the Portland/Vancouver area are displayed at Portland International Raceway: the event is one of America’s largest drive-through holiday light shows.

Visitors were asked to vote on their favorite artwork based on the theme “Holiday Memories.” Each participating school was provided with a 4’ x 8’ board along with paint and brushes contributed by Miller Paint.

Ms. Stromme and her class were recently honored at a special assembly and check presentation at Lake Shore.
